I live in a quiet neighborhood in Framingham, but I think we have to acknowledge that these quiet single-family-home neighborhoods are per-capita the most environmentally destructive type of development in any city. But on the other end of the spectrum you have large-scale developments like this, which are merely a temporary solution to our housing shortage while destroying undeveloped areas at the same time. How do we get new housing built that is in scale with existing neighborhoods, is architecturally pleasing, does not encroach on undeveloped areas, and is actually affordable? We have to take an incremental approach. Make it easier for people with unnecessarily large yards to build an ADU or convert their house to a duplex or triplex. Add more floors to existing downtown buildings. Convert parking lots. There's a lot of new housing projects being proposed, but we need an alternative if we are going to oppose all of them.
